Just back from an IBM “deep dive” into the deep and vexed question of security and society. IBM makes a considerable effort with these, inviting a couple of dozen external people to each of a series of eight events looking at trillion dollar questions with wide social and geographic impact. This is a demanding task, [...]

El Reg invited me to do my first piece of frelance journalism for several years – an article about Microsoft’s acquisition of Stefan Brands’ U-Prove work. I was never a brilliant journalist and I’m a bit rusty; the piece was longwinded and late. The Reg’s readers give pretty short shrift to most things anyway. In [...]

Crossposted from the TellThemWhatYouThink blog: I had the pleasure of speaking to the assembled great and good at the Tower08 Transformational Government conference on Monday this week. I hope that video will be available at some point, and I’ll link to it if it is. I talked, reasonably predictably, about the resusability of public data, [...]

The latest Diebold gaffe has leaked the results of the 2008 US Presidential elections early, says Onion TV. Diebold Accidentally Leaks Results Of 2008 Election Early Verily, the Onion goes from strength to strength. The production values are fab. And is the main presenter a machinima character, or “treated” live actor? I can’t decide.

IdealGov is delighted to welcome, starting shortly, the first-ever blogging Permanent Secretary. We’ve had Ministers: Jim Murphy, and Hazel Blears’ PR department, but to have a Permanent Secretary reporting direct to the Prime Minister is a UK first, perhaps a world first. Sir Bonar Neville-Kingdom is Permanent Secretary at Large with especial responsibility for efficiency, [...]

Oh wow. Oh wow. Every bit as exciting – and this is saying something – as the Viva Obama Mariachi is the long-awaited first public sighting of the MySociety FoI service. So what does it do? It makes it easy to make FoI requests. It lists central and local government FoI officers, and you can [...]

There’s a flattering reference to IdealGov in this week’s Economist, with a bit of a sting in the tail. But it makes me look like an unconstructive critic, so to be true to the spirit of Wibbi I have to add something. The Economist says (in a piece about e-government/i-government called Look it up on [...]

WRITTEN ON Thursday, February 7th, 2008 BY Richard S AND STORED IN Save Time and Money, What do we want?

Being of little consequence, again this year I filed my Personal Self Assessment tax return online. Luckily, missing the later chaos. The service seemed better this year although the form still contains too much jargon and, thanks to the crazy complexity of our tax system, it is still far too complicated. Late as always, I [...]

In the wake of the HMRC data fiasco I wrote to my MP about my concerns about centralised health records. Jeremy Hunt replied within 18 hours (which must be some sort of record), wrote to the Minister, and has now forwarded me the reply – see below.

So, it’s 31 Jan. In our heady customer-oriented 24/7 world how is the service of paying tax online treating customers? Not too well, suggests the author of last year’s Downing Street Power of Information review: Today is the 31st January 2008. That means all around the UK millions of people will be trying to pay [...]
