The more we have computerisation, the more we appear to need to rely on the rule book. Sadly rule-based governance doesn’t serve everyone. Check out the case of Al Bangura – the Watford FC player, who is facing deportation.

In essence Al fled his home country and entered the UK as a child. When he turned 18 he had to apply to remain in the country – being an adult (see the Beeb for more on this). Now because of the rules (and some apparent inconsistencies in his story – I mean, a teenager not being consistent :-) – he has to go back to Sierra Leone. The fact that he is making his home here, is making a contribution to the economy and providing entertainment to thousands seems to be outside the rule book.

WIBBI if officials were able to re-create the rule book to allow for some compassion.

PS If you want to support the appeal against his deportation, follow this petition

I think this is at the heart of the great big Wibbi. Where there’s no discretion there’s no room for serious professional compassion. You’re with being able to smile at people and call them “luv” while the computer says “no”
