The fun-loving and smarter-than-you-think No2ID campaign has quietly been building up a gallery of Pertinent Art

They’re saying that Jack Straw is lined up for Home Secretary and may axe ID cards (Telegraph, Guardian etc). Are they just teasing us? Or should we be rehearsing the Dance of the Intellectual Pygmies (previously seen here and here

I wondered about John Reid and this http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6648849.stm
A friend writes:
Walking down the street without being murdered is a freedom not a right, I think. Imagine what kind of society it would take to make that ‘right’
justiciable… we really don’t wanna go there, do we?Also, this is not an argument of principle, but: practically everyone in this country, practically all of the time, *does* in practice have the freedom to walk down the street without being murdered by terrorists, whose activities affect almost no-one directly. Not a tactful thing to say to any survivors of/ families of people who have died in terrorist attacks, but true. July 7 bombings were equivalent to about a week’s worth of traffic carnage.
Ah, John Reid. The one who thinks that we “may have to modify some of our freedoms”. The dictionary is no longer the sacred tome it that once was.

I’ve said this in other places, and I’ll say it again:
This is exactly why, in any other position of responsibility, the moment you (pre)announce your resignation, you are summoned to HR while your desk is cleared before the security guard escorts you off the premises to make sure you don’t do anything stupid.

Nope. Not a chance. The ID project is full steam ahead, as per the Chancellor on the radio the other day:
“Yes. We are going through with the ID plan”

where we see a re-definition of “civil liberties” (now apparently a gift of the state) and “privacy” (new meaning: all your details are belong to us).
