Tom Steinberg and Chris Lightfoot have done a presentation that uses YouGov data to place us all – net users, Guardian readers etc – in a world with compass points that lie economically between Mrs T and Lenin and in terms of openness and compassion somewhere between Kilroy-Silk and the Hampstead police. It shows UKIP at the heart of the Tory party, not at the far right.
It’s rather good I reckon.

Interesting, and more useful than most recent comment. However, I have difficulty placing my own confused opinions on their particular charts.
I hope that we will soon see a re-emergence of open debates about political beliefs and philosophies.
Those can be far more interesting and engaging than arguments about the fine detail of individual policies.
